Walden was founded along the original "Bayley-Hazen Military Road". During the American Revolutionary War, General Washington ordered the "Road" to be constructed to allow forces to gain access to Quebec. Early on, the mostly farming community established several one room school houses, which were used until 1996. Although Walden has no well defined center, the consolidation into one new school has united the town.

Presently there are farms with dairy cows, beef cattle, llamas, horses, forest products, organic vegetables, maple syrup, Christmas trees, and ginseng. Many residents offer services in home operated businesses.

Steam Mill Brook Wildlife Management Area, located adjacent to Coles Pond in Walden, covers over 7,000 acres and has many miles of multi-use trails.
